Keep Aluminium Windows and Doors Working Well

Sliding doors

Care for aluminium windows and doors includes more than making the glass shine. Dust, grit, damaged seals and changes in operation can affect the way an opening feels in daily use. A regular look at the complete frame and moving parts makes it easier to spot a small issue before you begin forcing a door or adjusting hardware at random.

Use a Gentle Cleaning Method

Reynaers Aluminium recommends lukewarm water and a pH-neutral detergent for routine aluminium cleaning.[1] Check the instructions supplied for your particular finish and glazing. Use a suitable soft cleaning material, rinse as directed and avoid experimenting with an aggressive cleaner simply because it removes dirt quickly. A frame finish and a glass coating may require different care.

Give Tracks and Accessible Recesses Attention

On a sliding opening, check accessible tracks for accumulated grit or objects that obstruct movement. Remove loose material gently using a method appropriate to the system. Do not dismantle rollers, remove a panel or probe hidden parts as an improvised cleaning exercise. Keep drainage paths unobstructed in accordance with the system’s maintenance instructions.

Watch for a Change in Operation

  • A sliding panel that has become noticeably harder to move.
  • A handle or lock that no longer engages normally.
  • A hinged opening that catches a frame or surrounding finish.
  • A seal that appears displaced, damaged or detached.
  • A fixing or component that has loosened or moved.

Note when the change started and whether it followed an impact, alteration or other work near the opening. A short video of normal operation and a close photograph of the affected area can be useful when requesting an installer’s assessment. Avoid repeatedly forcing a component that is resisting movement.

Follow the Hardware Instructions

Moving parts do not all need the same product or adjustment. The system’s operation and maintenance guide should govern lubrication, cleaning and servicing.[2] Ask for the relevant guide when the opening is handed over. Keep it with the glazing description, frame finish and hardware information so maintenance is based on the actual supplied package.

Separate Cleaning From Repair

A dirty surface, damaged finish and misaligned door are different jobs. Cleaning may improve appearance, but it does not establish whether a loose fixing, worn component or damaged seal needs repair. Tell the installer which symptom you are trying to resolve rather than buying one unspecified spray for every problem.

A Simple Care Record

Keep the opening reference, date checked, observations and any service work in one note. For a property with several similar windows, matching labels and photographs help ensure replacement parts or assessments relate to the correct opening. Use care intervals appropriate to the product instructions and exposure conditions.

Alpro Projects can review photos and the original installation details when an opening needs attention. A clear account of what changed helps define whether the next step is routine care, adjustment by the installer or component replacement.
